Natural Hair Update

Natural hair UPDATE!

Hi everyone. I hope you are all staying safe out there, staying home and staying in touch with your loved ones. And if you are one of the people out there on the front lines, risking your health for the many people infected by this virus, a big thank you from the bottom of my heart. I hope this post will serve as bit of a distraction from these challenging days of our lives.

Well, last time we spoke about my hair I still had chemically processed hair. It was growing and thriving but sometime in 2018 I became extremely curious about my natural hair. Was it really 4C? Could it do all these amazing things I see all these other naturalists do?🤔I mean, twists outs, flat twists, up-dos, high puffs, high buns…the list is endless. Not forgetting that I could still get a silk press if I wanted to have it straight for a while. The best of both worlds!! Y’all I was finally sold on the natural hair movement and more than ready to grow it out and do the big chop. If other ladies could embrace their natural hair textures, then why couldn’t I?

Can you tell how happy I am to be able to kiss my hair?😁

So, I did, in February 2019, and thus far the Lord has taken us. For the first 4 – 5 months after my big chop I kept my hair in braids. I had no idea what to do with it. It was much too short for twist outs and you know what, I am not proud to admit, I was not in love with how I looked. Took me a while to get used to it. I am learning how to take care of it and enjoying it too. I should have done this a long time ago. There is a certain type of freedom that comes with it, especially if like me, you had been using relaxers for the longest time – since I was in primary school to be exact and now I am in my 30s. You do the math😉.

I used the Luster’s S Curl activator and Eco-styling gel to achieve this twist out.

I keep my hair care regimen as simple as possible with the least products. In my relaxed hair days, I was quite the product junkie but now I have cut it down to just four products. One deep conditioner, Africa’s Best Orig Hair Mayonnaise; one moisturizer, Luster’s S Curl No Drip Activator Moisturizer; one shampoo, Shea Moisture Jamaican Black Castor Oil Strengthen and Restore for Damaged Hair; and an oil, Sunny Isle Jamaican Black Castor Oil, for my dry scalp. That has been working for me so far, so I am sticking with it. If it ain’t broke, right?

These are the products I use and love. I don’t think you need expensive products for your hair to be healthy.

So, there it is folks. I am happy I could finally post an update, and I look forward to sharing more. I’m curious to know. Is your hair natural or relaxed? What products do you use? Let me know in the comments.

    Hi Vimbayi
Thank you for sharing how you are caring for your natural hair. Good on you for embracing and learning how best to show off beautiful natural black hair. You are inspiring us all. My daughter has natural kinky hair and just like what you said that you did not love how it looked she feels the same, at work she feels it does not fit in, in its natural look (it’s not tidy).

With help and advice on how best to care and style natural black hair more of our daughters would be able to confidently wear their natural God given and blessed hair. Thank you for helping in this end. God bless you.

That is very true Yvonne. I’m so happy to be embracing my hair texture. I have good days and bad days but with time it will get easier for all of us. Thank you for stopping by 🙂
